Review of "Fray Botod"

Fray botod, meaning Big Bellied Friar, is a character written by Gracia Lopez Jaena in 1874 when he was only 18 years old. In this work, he showed to us a typical friar which are abusive, cruel, lazy, greedy and lustful. He particularly displayed the abuses and greediness of the friars that his first written work were against these people.

Graciano Lopez Jaena's "Fray Botod" portrayed a fat, hypocrite priest as a symbolism for the abuses of the Catholic  church as part of the Spanish rule in the Philippines. The priest in "Fray Botod" uses religion to rule and do bad things like, gambling, threatens and punishes college students, treats workers violently, and last of all conducts corruption.

Marxism and Feminism were observed in the story. It can be seen where the priest slapped the woman and were hurt badly. He uses his power to hurt and manipulate other people. Young girls were use by the priests. The priests overuse his power to threaten colleges.

The story showed to us how our country was merely controlled by the Spaniards. It is so sad to know that in that era other country controlling our country instead of our fellow citizen, and how higher people try to overuse their power to maltreat us.
